Sophie Jonas-Hill

Sophie Jonas-Hill is a pen and ink artist, who is such a luddite that she rarely uses digital, let alone Ai. Unlike Captain Lud, she is not fictional and can be found in her Kent Hobbit hole creating her intense drawings by hand, until some kind person interrupts her with a cup of tea. Her work is heavily inspired by folk tale, myth and legend, with a healthy sprinkle of alternative and queer culture, is behind the creation of her ‘Wild, Wide, Woods’ - a moonlit forest world inhabited by demons, sprites, wraiths, nixes and more, all of whom are as silly and flawed and argumentative as the little band of humans they occasionally run up against. The initial idea for the illustrations came from those dark days between Christmas and New Year, when the English countryside seems sleeping and you can believe again that the veil between the worlds has thinned, and where mummers are abroad, with the 'Hodan 'oss', the Kentish form of the costumed character built around a horse skull, with its fixed grin and dark eyes. When not lost in the woods, she can be found designing brilliantly coloured jigsaws for Ravensburger, darkly gothic tee-shirts for HMV, illustrations and covers for books, and one-off commissions. She is also a published author, teaches silversmithing, writing and arty stuff Via Kent Adult Education, and is an avid audio book listener. She’s always open to chatting over your ideas and is really nice to work with! You can find out more about her work, buy both originals and prints and contact her through her website at www.sophiejonashill.com at her IG @SophieJonasHill and in her online shop at https://thebritishcrafthouse.co.uk/shop/sophiejonashill/
