Sophie Jonas-Hill
Sophie lives and works in the UK, where she grew up on the edge of an ancient woodland. After an early career always focused on making things, she studied illustration at Falmouth University, where she focused on narrative illustration and built her skill in traditional pen and ink drawing. After graduating she began to create her detailed and magical world of ‘The Wild Wide Woods’. Her characters and creatures are inspired by folklore, dark fairy tale and whispers from the hidden world of forest, field and stream, stylistically influenced by the work of illustrators such as Edward Gory, Charles Addams and Maurice Sendak, with a hint of Art Deco. Her illustration aims to capture that sense sometimes felt on a warm summer night, or in the dark between Christmas and New Years, or Halloween, when the reality we take for granted thins and we glimpse a world apart. All her images are hand drawn in ink on paper, an she’s currently obsessed with working on round paper — to produce images for publishing, book covers, homeware and for anyone who wants to linger in her world. She also teaches online courses around drawing and creative writing and is a published author with the first in her Urban Fantasy trilogy out now.
